Photography Intern at Learning Unfurled
Cambridge based, £1,200/month, 4 days per week flexible
Context
Learning Unfurled is an online education consultancy specialising in designing and delivering high quality online learning experiences, particularly interactive narratives for learning.
Challenge
When creating narratives, images are required to bring the main character to life. Images of the same character in multiple ‘scenes’ responding to different challenges in the workplace are especially important. However, in trying to represent a more diverse spectrum of characters in this way, learning designers repeatedly fall short. Despite many corporations and academic institutions having EDIB targets and a clear desire to attract more diverse employees and students, there is little out there to help them represent diversity in their courses and training offerings.
Purpose of the Internship
Learning Unfurled aims to change the faces of work and who we expect to see in certain roles and in positions of influence within various fields through the creation of a diverse bank of images of people at work that learning designers, and ultimately marketers and other content creators, can use in their digital materials. This bank of images will be easily available for use immediately and will also be used as the input database to train an AI image generator with the specific purpose of creating high quality representations of diversity across society.
We are looking for 2 interns to help generate a minimum of 1200 usable images by the end of September. This is a paid internship for 6 weeks from 1st August to 15th September. All images generated will belong to Learning Unfurled but the photographers may retain rights to use the images for non profit-generating purposes.
Responsibilities and duties
Interns will be responsible for:
- Taking photographs of individuals in specified settings
- Editing photographs and ‘data cleaning’, i.e. ensuring that only high-quality images are held in the library and therefore the dataset for AI
- Preparing and briefing subjects on what is expected on the day
Supporting administrative duties include
- Writing ‘sketches’ and brief for subjects
- Organising photo shoots
- Securing written permissions from institutions to represent their spaces
- Informing subjects of the purpose and uses of their images
- Securing model release forms
- Storing permissions on Learning Unfurled’s systems
- Uploading and tagging photographs to the Learning Unfurled library
- Track the photos you have taken in terms of location, characteristics, work types and individuals represented.
- Marketing or promotional duties to promote the use of the library and gain insight into where to focus our efforts next.
About You
You will be a photographer who has completed at least 2 years of your photography degree. You will be able to share a selection of your portfolio for consideration. You will also have the following skills:
- Able to organise your own work effectively
- Written and oral communication skills
- Capable with digital storage/websites
Learning Unfurled is an equitable opportunities employer and actively seeks to engage young people from diverse backgrounds.
Given the nature of the project, Learning Unfurled strongly encourages applications from those who belong to or identify with the underrepresented groups we are looking to spotlight, including but not limited to those less represented on grounds of ethnic background, gender, sexuality, disability, neurodiversity, faith, age and body size.
How to Apply
Please fill in the application form by the 30th July. At the end it will ask for a CV and a link to your online portfolio and/or personal website where we can see some examples of your work. We will make offers as soon as we find suitable candidates so do not delay applying until the deadline.
